3 French Cotton Counts
The Continental metric system is used in France for numbering cotton yams, in which the number of hanks of 1,000 metres each required to weigh 500 grammes gives the counts. French hanks are divided into 10 skeins of 100 metres each. A convenient constant to change French into English and vice versa is 1.18. English count: 1.18 = French count. French count X 1.18 = English count.Dictionary of the English textile terms > French Cotton Counts

4 French Reeling
Reeling yarn is a process used when the yarn is required to be bleached or dyed. Usually the cross reeling method is adopted because there is less waste and a broken thread is easily found when winding. French reeling is practically the same as the English, but differs in the lengths of the hanks which are 1,000 metres. The circumference of the French reel is 1-43 metres = 561/4-in. The hanks are usually made into bundles of 5 kilogrammes, approximately 11-lb. Generally the counts of the yarn of French hanks is given according to the English denomination, where this is not the case, the English equivalent is obtained by multiplying the French count by 1.18 -
